>>Is
my employee really sick?
This
is going to sound awful, but I know that I have
employees who call in sick when they aren't really
sick...could be that they are out clubbing the night
before, hung over, or some other equally unacceptable
reason. What do you do when you suspect -- but do not
know for certain - that the employee is not really sick?
Myra's
answer to Is
the employee really sick?
I
can sure relate to you on this one.
First
of all, let me tell you what you don’t
want to do…Don’t
g
et personal by asking: “Are you
really sick?”
Instead,
discuss these points:
*
How many sick days the employee has left
*
The correct way to
give notice when using personal leave
for illness or when
going to a scheduled doctor’s
appointment
*
The effects of the absence on
productivity and co-workers
You
can ask the employee if he or she wants to talk about anything else,
but don’t probe.
I
would caution the employee that if she
uses up all of her personal days, it
will be necessary for her doctor to
write a letter explaining her needs to
be away from work and when she can
return.

I
was very pleased with Myra' presentation, but even more
so, I was left with a sense of new energy and desire to
put her recommendations to use. I
can't wait for Monday!
